Waste Reduction, Waste Reuse, Waste Recycling - what are the differences?

We are fully committed to ensuring that waste is managed in the most efficient way possible by reducing the amount produced and making sure any unused waste is utilised. This is why we are here to tell you about the waste hierarchy and the 3 Rs’!

The waste hierarchy is a method that is used to prioritise different kinds of waste management. This is a process that allows us to deal with different types of waste in different ways.

The 3R’s of waste management

Waste Reduction

Waste reduction is all about limiting the amount of waste that is generated, from household level to huge businesses. This is at the top of the hierarchy because it is the most effective way to initially limit environmental factors, by reducing waste in the first place!

Some ways of reducing waste could be:

  • Reusing products rather than disposing them
  • Repairing broken items rather than throwing them away
  • Buying products with less packaging

Waste Reuse

If reducing the initial waste is not an option, the next best thing to do is to reuse it. Finding a different way to use a product or item means less waste is produced.

There are lots of benefits to reusing waste:

  • Community benefits: Why not donate any clothes or other items to those in your local community? That way you are helping others as well as reusing waste.
  • Economic benefits: You can save money but choosing to reuse items instead of purchasing new ones.
  • Environmental benefits: Naturally, reusing waste is great for the environment. Instead of polluting the environment with excess waste, making sure you reuse it will benefit the environment greatly.

Waste Recycling

The last of the ‘3 Rs’ is recycling which, of course, is a great way to manage your waste. Here at The Waste Group we are dedicated to changing the perception of the waste industry; we are completely environmentally minded and put our ‘Go Green’ ethos at the forefront of all of our work.
