County-wide asbestos disposal across Devon

Devon’s housing stock ranges from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Exeter, Plymouth and the coastal resorts to inter-war and post-war estates, rural cottages and farm outbuildings across the Exe valley, mid-Devon and the two moors. Garage roofs, soffits, flue pipes, Artex ceilings, pipe lagging, old boilers and outbuilding sheets in these properties commonly contain asbestos that needs safe, legal disposal.

The Waste Group provides licensed asbestos disposal across the whole of Devon, fulfilled through our accredited national disposal partner. Whether you are a homeowner with a few garage sheets, a landlord clearing a rental, or a contractor on a commercial site, we cover the county end to end. Depending on the quantity of asbestos, you can book van collection for small domestic jobs, an asbestos skip for medium-sized jobs, or a RoRo container for larger commercial clearances. Every booking includes the Waste Consignment Note and Duty of Care paperwork required for legal disposal.

Do you need asbestos removal or asbestos disposal?

These are two different services and the difference matters:

  • Asbestos removal means stripping asbestos out of a building. For most asbestos types this must be done by an HSE-licensed removal contractor. We do not provide this service.
  • Asbestos disposal means taking away asbestos that has already been removed, bagged or wrapped. This is what we do.

If you have loose garage roof sheets, broken ceiling tiles, bags of material from a roofer, or an old boiler flue that has already been taken out — you need disposal. Call us on 01202 247716.

If the asbestos is still attached to the building and needs stripping out, you will need a licensed removal contractor first. We can then dispose of what they bag.

Asbestos skip hire across Devon

Asbestos skip hire is the right choice for medium-sized jobs — tradespeople clearing a domestic project, commercial property owners, landlords working through multiple garages, or builders on an extension or conversion. Asbestos skips are supplied sealed and compliant with hazardous waste regulations, and are collected directly for licensed disposal.

We supply three asbestos skip sizes across Devon:

  • 6 yard open asbestos skip — suitable for small to medium loads such as a single garage roof strip or a boiler room clearance.
  • 12 yard open asbestos skip — for larger domestic clearances or a small commercial job.
  • 16 yard enclosed asbestos skip — fully enclosed and recommended where visible containment is required, for example on roadside jobs or commercial sites.

All skip sizes include 2 tonnes of asbestos waste. Additional tonnage is charged at the rate shown below. Devon falls within our Zone 7 pricing area.

Asbestos skip hire Devon — prices

Skip size Includes Price (inc VAT)

12 yard open Up to 2 tonnes £2,678
16 yard enclosed Up to 2 tonnes £2,678
Excess tonnage Per tonne £410
Admin fee Per booking £50

All prices include VAT. Waiting time over 30 minutes and out-of-hours call-out charges apply in line with our standard terms. A skip permit may be required for placement on a public road — confirm access at the time of booking.

Asbestos RoRo hire across Devon

Roll-on roll-off containers are the right choice for larger asbestos clearances — demolition projects, multi-property landlord clearances, commercial and agricultural sites across the county, or full building strip-outs. RoRos need good vehicle access, so they are ideal for yards, farms and larger sites rather than narrow residential streets.

We supply three asbestos RoRo sizes across Devon:

  • 20 yard open RoRo — for medium-to-large loads where an open-top container works on site.
  • 40 yard open RoRo — for the largest commercial and demolition jobs.
  • 35 yard enclosed RoRo — fully enclosed, required for some site permits and highly recommended for any job where visible containment matters.

All RoRo sizes include 3 tonnes of asbestos waste. Additional tonnage is charged as shown. Devon falls within Zone 7.

Asbestos van collection for Devon homeowners

Van collection is the right option for smaller domestic jobs — a couple of garage roof sheets, an old Artex ceiling stash, a removed boiler flue, or a few bags left by a roofer. You package the asbestos to specification, we send a van to your Devon address, our driver loads it, and you receive your Waste Consignment Note.

Devon County Council does run a chargeable asbestos service at several recycling centres — covered below — but it is capped at 10 sheets or bags and bonded asbestos only. Van collection makes sense when you have more than that limit, non-bonded asbestos the centres won’t take, waste from a rental or commercial property, or when you simply don’t want to transport hazardous material in your own vehicle.

How it works

  1. Package the asbestos. Whole sheets (max 6ft × 3ft, up to 25kg each) wrapped in 1000-gauge polythene. Smaller pieces double-bagged in red asbestos bags, max 15kg per bag.
  2. Book the collection. Call us on 01202 247716 with your item count and postcode. We will confirm a collection day, usually within 3 to 5 working days.
  3. Driver collects. Our driver arrives, loads the material, and issues your Waste Consignment Note on the spot.
  4. Licensed disposal. The asbestos is transported under ADR regulations to a licensed hazardous waste facility.

Asbestos van collection Devon — prices

Item Price (inc VAT)
Transport charge £446
Per bag (10–15 kg) £11.05
Per sheet or wrap (20–25 kg) £22.35
Per door or boiler (30 kg) £46.10
Consignment note £50

Typical Devon van collection costs

  • Small garage roof — 10 cement sheets already wrapped: £446 transport + (10 × £22.35) + £50 consignment note = £719.50 inc VAT
  • Old boiler flue and 4 bags of Artex rubble: £446 + £46.10 + (4 × £11.05) + £50 = £586.30 inc VAT
  • Large double garage roof — 20 sheets wrapped: £446 + (20 × £22.35) + £50 = £943 inc VAT

All prices include VAT. Waste that exceeds standard item weights is subject to additional charges. If the total load exceeds 1 tonne, a second collection may be required.

  • East Devon (EX): Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth, Seaton, Axminster, Colyton
  • Plymouth & the south west (PL): Plymouth, Ivybridge, Tavistock, Kingsbridge

How to prepare asbestos safely for collection

Whether you are hiring a skip, a RoRo or booking a van collection, asbestos must be packaged correctly before our driver arrives. This protects you, our driver, and anyone handling the waste at the disposal facility.

  • Do not break sheets or sand surfaces — keep all material as intact as possible. Broken edges release fibres.
  • Wrap whole sheets in 1000-gauge polythene. Standard sheets are 6ft × 3ft and up to 25kg each.
  • Double-bag smaller pieces in red asbestos bags. Bags must not exceed 15kg.
  • Label clearly with asbestos warning markings on bags and wrapped sheets.
  • Dampen material lightly with water to reduce dust. Do not soak it.
  • Wear proper PPE — disposable coveralls, FFP3 mask, gloves, goggles. Dispose of used PPE with the asbestos in a sealed bag.
  • If you are not confident handling it, hire a licensed removal contractor. We will dispose of what they bag.

For detailed guidance on safe handling, see the HSE asbestos essentials guide.

Fully licensed disposal with full Duty of Care paperwork

The Waste Group’s asbestos disposal service is fulfilled through our national disposal partner — a market-leading asbestos waste specialist operating since 2000, with the largest asbestos waste transfer station in the South East of England. Every collection runs through accredited infrastructure and qualified drivers.

Every asbestos booking includes the legal paperwork required to prove your asbestos has been disposed of lawfully:

  • Waste Consignment Note (HWCN) — legally required for all hazardous waste movement. Issued on collection.
  • Licensed waste carrier — our disposal partner holds full Environment Agency waste carrier registration.
  • ADR-regulated transport — asbestos is moved under dangerous goods regulations by ADR-qualified drivers.
  • Licensed hazardous waste facility — asbestos is taken to a permitted asbestos waste transfer station, then to licensed landfill cells. Final disposal certificate available on request.
  • Industry accreditations — our disposal partner is ARCA-accredited, FORS Silver certified, and an ESA and NFDC member.
  • Both cement-bonded and fibrous asbestos accepted — including AIB, pipe lagging, Artex, boiler insulation and contaminated soil, not just cement sheets.

Can a Devon recycling centre take your asbestos?

Devon County Council is not obliged to accept asbestos — it is not classed as household waste — but it does run a chargeable service for small quantities of bonded asbestos at selected recycling centres: Bideford, Exeter (Exton Road and Pinbrook Road), Honiton, Kingsbridge, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Tavistock, Tiverton and Torrington.

What the Devon sites will accept

  • Cement-bonded asbestos only — sheeting, pipes, guttering or flues of household origin. No Artex, pipe lagging, AIB or insulation
  • A maximum of 10 sheets or bags per visit
  • Double-wrapped in heavy-duty polythene and sealed; a charge applies
  • Devon residents only — site staff cannot help you load it, and you transport it there yourself

When you will need a licensed collection instead

  • You have non-bonded asbestos — Artex, pipe lagging, AIB, boiler insulation or floor tiles. The Devon sites will not take these; we will.
  • You have more than 10 sheets or bags — a full garage roof will exceed the limit.
  • You don’t want to transport hazardous waste in your own vehicle, or you’re a long way from a participating site.
  • The waste is from a commercial property, a rental you let out, or any income-generating work.

Asbestos disposal Devon — frequently asked questions

How much does asbestos disposal cost in Devon?

Devon falls within our Zone 7 pricing area. Van collection starts at £446 transport plus £22.35 per sheet or £11.05 per bag. An asbestos skip (6, 12 or 16 yard) is £2,678 inc VAT including up to 2 tonnes, and a RoRo is £3,096 inc VAT including 3 tonnes. Every job includes the Waste Consignment Note. Call 01202 247716 for a fixed quote.

Can I take asbestos to a recycling centre in Devon?

Devon County Council runs a chargeable service for small quantities of bonded (cement) asbestos at selected sites — Bideford, Exeter, Honiton, Kingsbridge, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Tavistock, Tiverton and Torrington — capped at 10 sheets or bags per visit. Non-bonded types such as Artex, pipe lagging and insulation are not accepted, staff cannot help you load, and you transport it there yourself. For those types, larger quantities, or commercial waste, a licensed collection is the practical choice.

Can I put asbestos in a regular skip?

No. Asbestos is hazardous waste and must never be mixed with general waste. If asbestos is found in a standard skip, the whole load is treated as hazardous and charged at hazardous waste rates. Asbestos must go in a sealed asbestos skip or be collected by van, and must always be accompanied by a Waste Consignment Note.

What types of asbestos do you accept?

Both cement-bonded and non-bonded (fibrous) asbestos — including AIB (asbestos insulating board), Artex, pipe lagging, boiler insulation, floor tiles and contaminated soil, not just cement sheets. This is a key difference from the Devon council sites, which accept bonded cement asbestos only and cap it at 10 sheets.

Do I need a licence to dispose of asbestos from my own home?

Householders do not need a waste carrier licence to dispose of asbestos from their own property, but the disposal itself must go through a licensed carrier and be accompanied by a Waste Consignment Note. Our service provides both, so your disposal is fully documented and legal.

Which parts of Devon do you cover?

The whole county — Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay, Barnstaple, Bideford, Tiverton, Honiton, Newton Abbot, Tavistock and every town and village in between, across the EX, PL and TQ postcodes. Call 01202 247716 with your postcode for a fixed quote.
