What is Ro Ro Skip Hire?

Ro Ro hire is the preferred waste removal solution for high-volume commercial, construction and demolition projects. Ro Ro stands for roll-on roll-off — a method of skip hire designed for high-volume commercial, construction and demolition waste that a standard skip cannot accommodate. Unlike standard skips which are crane-lifted onto a vehicle, Ro Ro skips roll onto a specialist hook-lift vehicle using their own wheels. This allows for significantly larger skip sizes, making them the preferred choice for contractors, housebuilders, demolition companies and commercial operators with ongoing large-volume waste removal requirements.

Ro Ro skips are priced on a transport and tonnage basis rather than a fixed hire price. You pay a delivery and collection charge plus a cost per tonne for the waste loaded, subject to a minimum chargeable weight. This makes them a highly cost-effective solution for projects where the volume and weight of waste is substantial and ongoing.

Ro Ro Skip Sizes

The Waste Group offers four Ro Ro skip sizes to suit every commercial and construction requirement.

16 Yard Ro Ro Skip

The smallest Ro Ro size. Suited to medium-volume commercial clearances, light demolition and mixed construction waste loads where a standard skip is too small but a larger Ro Ro is more than required. Ideal as a step up from a 12 yard standard skip.

20 Yard Ro Ro Skip

Our most popular Ro Ro size. The 20 yard is the go-to choice for the majority of construction and commercial projects — large enough to handle significant waste volumes but compact enough to fit most commercial sites and access routes. If you are unsure which size to order, the 20 yard is the most frequently chosen size across our customer base.

30 Yard Ro Ro Skip

Suited to larger construction sites, full demolition projects and high-volume commercial strip-outs. The 30 yard provides substantially more capacity than the 20 yard, reducing the frequency of exchanges on busy sites and keeping projects moving.

40 Yard Ro Ro Skip

The largest Ro Ro skip in our fleet. Best suited to major demolition programmes, large housebuilding sites and commercial operations with continuous high-volume waste generation. Requires adequate site access, turning space and hardstanding for safe placement.

Ro Ro Hire vs Standard Skip Hire

Choosing between a Ro Ro skip and a standard skip depends on the volume and weight of waste your project will generate. Here is a simple guide to help you decide.

Standard skips (4–12 yards) are the right choice for domestic projects, smaller trade jobs, house clearances and garden waste. They are crane-lifted, fixed price and suit projects where the total waste volume is manageable within a 12 yard capacity.

Ro Ro skips (16–40 yards) are the right choice for commercial construction, demolition, large site clearances and any project generating ongoing high-volume waste. They are significantly larger, priced on transport and tonnage, and designed for customers who need serious capacity over an extended project timeline.

Ro Ro Hire — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Ro Ro skip?

A Ro Ro (roll-on roll-off) skip is a large open-top container used for commercial, construction and demolition waste. Available in 16, 20, 30 and 40 yard sizes, Ro Ro skips are loaded onto a specialist hook-lift vehicle rather than being crane-lifted like a standard skip. They are significantly larger than standard skips and priced on a transport and tonnage basis.

How much does Ro Ro hire cost?

Ro Ro hire is priced on a transport and tonnage basis — a delivery and collection charge plus a cost per tonne for the waste loaded, subject to a minimum chargeable weight of 5 tonnes. The exact price depends on your location, the skip size required and the type of waste being loaded. Call 0800 652 0160 for a project-specific quote.

What is the difference between a Ro Ro skip and a standard skip?

Standard skips (4–12 yards) are crane-lifted, fixed price and suited to domestic and smaller trade projects. Ro Ro skips (16–40 yards) roll onto a hook-lift vehicle, are significantly larger and are priced on transport and tonnage. They are designed for high-volume commercial, construction and demolition waste.

Do I need a permit for a Ro Ro skip?

No permit is needed if the skip is placed on private land or a commercial site. A council permit is required if any part of the skip occupies a public highway. Requirements vary by local authority — we can advise at the time of booking.

What sizes of Ro Ro skip are available?

We offer 16, 20, 30 and 40 yard Ro Ro skips. The 20 yard is our most popular size for construction and commercial projects. Call 0800 652 0160 if you are unsure which size is right for your project.

Can I get next-day Ro Ro hire?
