How much does asbestos skip hire cost?

All prices plus a £42 admin charge per job, which covers the Environment Agency hazardous waste paperwork — the consignment note, the registration and the three-year record. Skip and RoRo hire is 28 days; containers kept beyond that incur £7 per day.

Van collection, priced per item

The useful route for a garage roof:

Asbestos skip hire costs considerably more than a standard skip, and the difference is not margin. It is the container, the licensing and the disposal gate fee. A standard 8-yard skip goes to a transfer station; an asbestos skip goes to a permitted hazardous waste cell.

If your job is a single garage roof or a few soffit boards, do not hire a skip. Van collection from £364 inc VAT is far cheaper, and we will tell you so on the phone. A typical garage roof is priced per sheet at £18.60 plus transport and admin, not per container.

Skip hire makes sense when asbestos is part of a wider clearance — a renovation, a demolition, a site strip — where you need the container on site for days rather than a single collection.

Open or enclosed: which asbestos skip do you need?

This is where most guidance gets it wrong. The usual rule of thumb — bonded asbestos is fine, friable is not — is not the actual test, and following it gets loads rejected at the landfill weighbridge.

The test is the condition of the waste and how it is packed.

Wrapping is what earns the open skip, not the material. Whole asbestos cement sheets, wrapped as parcels or loaded into a lined container, are exempt from the Carriage of Dangerous Goods rules under Special Provision 168.

Break those same sheets or load them loose and the exemption is gone. Full ADR then applies, and only a fully enclosed container will do — one with a rigid roof, rigid sides, rigid ends and a floor. Industry guidance from the Environmental Services Association is explicit that open containers and tarpaulin-covered loads are not permitted for this type of waste.

What is never acceptable is a standard skip with a sheet thrown over it. The HSE says the same in its asbestos waste disposal guidance, and a load presented that way can be quarantined at the disposal site with the Environment Agency informed.

Who does the wrapping?

You do. On every route we offer, bagging and wrapping the asbestos is the customer’s responsibility. We supply the container, collect it under licence, dispose of it at a permitted facility and complete the Environment Agency paperwork.

That matters more here than anywhere else on this page, because the open-skip route only holds if the sheets are wrapped properly. Get the wrapping wrong and the load loses its exemption; a badly presented load can be refused or quarantined at the disposal site.

So the honest advice on asbestos skip hire is this: if you are confident wrapping whole sheets to 1000-gauge, the open skip is your cheapest compliant route. If you are not, take the enclosed skip — it is the more forgiving option, because it stays compliant whether the material is whole or broken.

What you can and cannot put in an asbestos skip

Accepted — bonded (non-friable) asbestos:

• Corrugated asbestos cement roofing sheets
• Garage and shed roof panels
• Soffit and fascia boards
• Asbestos cement fence panels and flue pipes
• Asbestos floor tiles and bitumen backing
• Water tank and cistern panels

Not accepted in a skip — friable asbestos:

• Pipe and boiler lagging
• Sprayed coatings and asbestos insulation board (AIB)
• Loose fill insulation

Friable asbestos crumbles under hand pressure and releases fibres with almost no disturbance. It requires a licensed removal contractor under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 — not a skip, and not us. We handle disposal, not removal. One skip, one waste stream. Asbestos skip hire covers asbestos only. Mixing general rubble in contaminates the entire load, and it is then charged as hazardous waste at hazardous rates. If your project produces both, you need an asbestos skip and a standard skip.

Can you dispose of asbestos in a normal skip?

No. A general-purpose skip is never suitable for asbestos, whatever its condition. It breaches the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, and it contaminates the entire load — you then pay hazardous disposal rates on everything in the skip, not just the asbestos.

Step 3 — Book a date. Asbestos containers are booked in rather than dropped on demand — they come through our ARCA-accredited disposal partner. We agree a delivery date with you on the call, so you know where you stand before you commit.

Step 4 — You fill it. Asbestos must be double-bagged before it goes in — red UN-approved inner bag, clear polythene outer, both labelled. Whole sheets should be wrapped as parcels rather than broken up. Damp the material down, never use power tools on it. Keep the container secure between loads.

Step 5 — Collection and audit trail. Licensed carrier collects, Waste Consignment Note completed on site with your copy left with you, duplicate signed at the receiving facility and held on file for the legally required three years.

Frequently asked questions about asbestos skip hire

What is the cheapest way to dispose of asbestos?

For small quantities of bonded asbestos, van collection from £364 inc VAT is almost always cheaper than a skip. If you are hiring a skip, keeping sheets whole and wrapping them properly keeps you in the cheaper open-skip route. A few council Household Waste Recycling Centres accept small amounts, but most in the South of England do not, and those that do restrict quantity and require pre-booking.

How much asbestos fits in an asbestos skip?

The hire includes 2 tonnes of bonded asbestos cement — in practice roughly 25–35 corrugated roof sheets depending on size and thickness. Weight matters more than volume with asbestos cement; it is dense, and skips reach their weight limit well before they look full. Anything over the 2 tonnes included is charged at £342 per tonne.

Do you bag and wrap the asbestos for me?

No — bagging and wrapping is the customer’s responsibility on every service we offer, skip, RoRo and van collection alike. What we handle is the container, the licensed transport, disposal at a permitted facility, and all the Environment Agency paperwork. If you tell us what you have before you start, we will talk you through exactly how it needs to be wrapped.

What happens if I wrap it wrong?

Asbestos that arrives at the disposal site broken, loose or unwrapped no longer qualifies for the carriage exemption. In practice that means the load can be refused or quarantined and returned to you, and you pay for the wasted journey. It is worth five minutes on the phone before you start.

Do I need a licence to fill an asbestos skip?

Not for bonded asbestos. A competent person — homeowner or general builder — can legally handle and bag non-friable asbestos cement, provided they follow HSE guidance on PPE, damping down and double-bagging. Friable asbestos is different and requires an HSE-licensed contractor.

Do you remove the asbestos from my roof?

No. We are a disposal service, not a removal contractor. If the material is already down and bagged, we collect and dispose of it under licence. If it still needs taking down, you either do that yourself following HSE guidance for bonded asbestos, or you engage a licensed removal contractor.

How long can I keep the skip?

Standard hire is 28 days. After that a rental charge of £7 per day applies until the container is exchanged or collected, so tell us if a job is likely to overrun and we will arrange an exchange rather than let the charge run. The skip must be kept closed and secure whenever it is not being loaded.

What paperwork do I get?

A Waste Consignment Note completed on site, your copy left with you, confirmation of the receiving facility and its permit number, and three-year retention of all consignment notes with copies on request. If you need documentation sent to an insurer, council, building control or principal contractor, say so at booking.

Can I put a bit of general rubble in with the asbestos?

No. It contaminates the load and the whole skip is then charged at hazardous rates. Hire a standard skip alongside it.
