Skip Hire in Sherborne and Sturminster Newton: 2026 Prices and Sizes

If you are clearing a property, renovating a cottage or emptying a barn in Sherborne or Sturminster Newton, a skip is usually the cheapest way to deal with the waste. We have covered North Dorset since 2007, and the two towns sit in different pricing zones — so it is worth knowing which applies to you before you book.

Sherborne (DT9) is Zone 3. Sturminster Newton (DT10) is Zone 2. The difference is haulage: both are a fair distance from our depot at Wareham, and Sherborne is further still.

The inert skip is the one most North Dorset customers miss

Look at the middle column. A 6-yard inert skip in Sherborne is £282 against £384 for the same skip taking general waste — about £100 saved.

An inert skip takes soil, turf, rubble, hardcore, concrete, bricks and tiles, and nothing else. If you are lifting a patio, digging out a drive, taking down a wall or clearing a yard, that is the whole job. The saving disappears the moment a bin bag of general rubbish goes in, because the load then has to be priced as general waste — so keep it clean and it stays cheap.

Heavy materials also reach the weight limit long before the skip looks full. For soil and rubble, a 4 or 6 yard is almost always the right call rather than an 8.

Farm and smallholding clearances

A lot of our North Dorset work is not household at all — it is barn clear-outs, old fencing and field shelters, silage plastic, and the accumulated contents of a yard that has been in the same family for forty years.

Two things worth knowing:

Separate the green waste. Brash, hedge cuttings and tree work are cheaper handled as green waste than mixed in with general. On a big clearance the gap is meaningful.

For anything over a couple of skips, ask about a roll-on roll-off. A 16, 20, 30 or 40 yard RoRo is priced on transport plus tonnage rather than a flat rate, which works out better on volume and means one delivery instead of five. Farmyards almost always have the space and the hardstanding for one. See RoRo hire in Sherborne.

And if there is asbestos, stop. Cement sheet roofing on barns, garages and outbuildings is common across North Dorset and it cannot go in any skip. It needs licensed disposal — we handle that separately for Sherborne and Sturminster Newton.

Do you need a permit?

Only if the skip goes on a public road. In practice, most Sherborne and Sturminster Newton jobs sit on a drive, a yard or a verge you own, and no permit is needed.

If it does have to go on the highway, Dorset Council issues the permit and we will arrange it for you — just say when you book, because it adds a few days.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I keep the skip?

Fourteen days are included. After that it is £30 a week, so give us a ring if the job runs on and we will sort it out.

Why is Sherborne more expensive than Sturminster Newton?

Distance from the depot. Sherborne (DT9) falls in our Zone 3 and Sturminster Newton (DT10) in Zone 2 — about £12 on a 4-yard skip. Everything else is identical.

Can you deliver to a farm track or a field gateway?

Usually, yes, though we need to get a lorry in and turned. Firm ground matters more than width. Tell us what the access is like when you book and we will send the right vehicle rather than turning up and failing — a wasted journey is chargeable (£156 in Zone 3, £144 in Zone 2) and nobody wants that.

What can’t go in the skip?

Asbestos, wet paint, liquids and chemicals, clinical waste, and anything explosive. Tyres, fridges, mattresses, sofas, gas bottles and electricals can all go in, but they have to be declared and carry a small surcharge — tyres from £14.40, mattresses from £30, small electricals from £12.

Can I put plasterboard in a general skip?

No — gypsum has to be kept separate by law. Use a plasterboard skip or a plasterboard bag (£168 in Sherborne, £156 in Sturminster Newton). If plasterboard turns up in a general load it is a £180 cleaning charge plus £144 a tonne, which is far more than booking the right skip.

How quickly can you deliver to North Dorset?

Next day, as standard. North Dorset is a longer run from the depot than the coast, so we schedule it properly rather than promising same-day and letting you down. Ring before the afternoon and next-day is straightforward.
