Skip permit Dorset 2026 prices have increased. Both Dorset Council and BCP Council have raised their highway permit fees from April 2026. Skip permits are required whenever a skip is placed on a road, pavement or public land — and the price you pay now reflects the new council rates.

The good news is that The Waste Group handles your permit application for you as part of the booking process. You do not need to contact the council yourself, fill in any forms, or chase anything up. We take care of it from start to finish.

Do You Need a Skip Permit in Dorset in 2026?

Not every skip hire requires a permit. Whether you need one depends entirely on where the skip will be placed.

You do not need a permit if the skip is placed entirely on your private property — for example, on your driveway, in your garden, or on a private car park.

You do need a skip permit in Dorset if the skip will be placed on a public road, pavement, or any area maintained by the council. This applies to the majority of residential street placements where there is no driveway available.

If you are unsure, let us know when booking and we will advise you. In most cases it is straightforward — if the skip needs to sit in the road outside your house, a permit is required.

New Skip Permit Dorset 2026 Prices

From 1 April 2026, both Dorset Council and BCP Council have increased their permit fees. The new prices are as follows.

A 14-day Dorset Council permit costs £132 inc VAT. If you need to extend the hire, a 7-day Dorset Council extension costs £66 inc VAT.

For customers in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, a 7-day BCP Council permit costs £114 inc VAT. A 7-day extension also costs £114 inc VAT.

BCP Council covers the BH1 to BH23 and BH31 postcode areas. Dorset Council covers all other areas of the county including Weymouth, Dorchester, Wareham, Blandford, Bridport, Wimborne and surrounding towns.

Permit costs are shown as a separate line on your skip hire quote. They are not included in the base skip hire price.

What Does the Skip Permit Cover?

A skip permit gives legal permission for the skip to occupy space on the public highway for the duration stated. The permit is issued in the name of The Waste Group as the skip operator and we are responsible for ensuring the skip is correctly lit and marked throughout the hire period.

  • Legal placement of the skip on the public road or pavement
  • The skip operator’s liability for the skip during the hire period
  • Confirmation that the relevant council has been notified of the skip placement
  • A defined start and end date for the permitted period

How Long Does a Skip Permit in Dorset Last?

Dorset Council permits are issued for 14 days as standard, which matches our standard 14-day skip hire period. If you need the skip for longer, a 7-day extension can be arranged for £66 inc VAT.

BCP Council permits are issued for 7 days. If you need the skip on the road for the full 14-day hire period, an extension will be required after the first 7 days at £114 inc VAT. We will flag this at the time of booking so there are no surprises.

We Handle Your Skip Permit in Dorset — You Don’t Need to Do a Thing

When you book a skip with The Waste Group and a permit is needed, here is what we do:

  • We apply to the relevant council on your behalf before delivery
  • We ensure the permit is in place before the skip arrives
  • We mark and light the skip correctly as required by law
  • We manage any extensions if you need to keep the skip longer
  • We collect the skip and close the permit when the hire period ends

You do not need to contact Dorset Council or BCP Council, apply for anything online, or manage any paperwork. We handle everything from start to finish.

What About Skips on Private Land?

If you can fit the skip on your driveway or private land, no skip permit is needed and no permit cost applies. This is the most cost-effective option where it is practical.

Bear in mind that the skip needs enough room to be delivered safely — our lorry requires clear access and enough space to lower the skip. If you are unsure whether your driveway can take a skip, call us on 0800 652 0160 and we will advise before you book.
