What is Asbestos? Why is it so dangerous?

Asbestos and asbestos waste disposal is extremely hazardous and can occur in a number of different forms. Asbestos is formed of minerals made up of millions of microscopic fibres. In the past, Asbestos was used in many buildings. It was regularly used in Artex ceilings, flooring, roofing & types of insulation and plumbing materials. This was particularly the case during the building boom between the 1950s to the late 1980s. Asbestos is now a banned material in the UK and cannot be used. It is often found in buildings & outbuildings formed prior to the year 2000.

If the Asbestos-containing materials remain intact & lay undisturbed they pose minimal risk. The problem starts when you want to undertake any work(s) & disturb it. If you uncover Asbestos at this point, it is certainly the time you will want to contact The Waste Group Asbestos disposal experts swiftly.

asbestos what is it

Asbestos is dangerous

Materials containing Asbestos become a health hazard once damaged or disturbed & their microscopic fibres are released into the air. These fibres can be inhaled, they are not only damaging to your health, but also the whole environment in general. When these fibres are inhaled, they can lead to extremely serious diseases. These diseases do not have immediate effects but can cause a multitude of fatal or serious diseases. It is incredibly important you fully protect yourself, and do not underestimate the dangers.

Do you need asbestos removal, or asbestos disposal?

Most people searching for asbestos removal in Ringwood actually need two separate things, and it is worth knowing which is which before you ring anyone — because they are different trades and they are priced differently.

Removal is taking the material down: lifting the garage roof sheets, pulling out the artex ceiling, stripping the insulating board. Disposal is what happens next — the waste has to be collected by a licensed carrier, moved under a hazardous waste consignment note, and taken to a permitted facility.

The Waste Group handles the disposal half. We are a licensed waste carrier, not a removal contractor. That matters to your budget, because for a lot of Ringwood jobs the removal is something you can legally do yourself.

What you can legally take down yourself

Bonded asbestos cement — corrugated garage and shed roofing, soffits, flue pipes, water tanks — is non-licensed work. A competent person following HSE guidance on PPE, damping down and double-bagging can legally remove it without a licence. That is the majority of what we collect around BH24.

What needs a licensed contractor

Asbestos insulating board (AIB), sprayed coatings, lagging and loose-fill insulation are friable — the fibres release easily — and that work is licensed. If you are not certain which you have, do not disturb it to find out. Send us a photo first.

Get that split right and a job quoted at well over a thousand pounds by a removal firm can come down to the cost of licensed disposal alone.

Asbestos disposal prices for Ringwood (BH24)

Ringwood sits in our Zone 5 for asbestos, the same band as Dorset — so you are not paying a premium for being over the Hampshire border. There are three ways to get asbestos off a BH24 property.

Van collection — homeowner scale

From £364 inc VAT, plus the £50.40 inc VAT hazardous waste consignment note that applies to every asbestos job.

The price is built from a fixed transport charge for the zone, the consignment note, then a charge per item by weight band — bags of bonded debris, sheets or wrapped panels, and heavier items such as doors, tanks and boilers. You pay for what you actually have rather than a flat call-out, which is why a few soffit boards costs considerably less than a full garage roof.

This is the right option for a single garage or shed roof, fence panels, a water tank or a handful of bagged fragments.

Asbestos skip — renovation scale

£2,239.20 inc VAT for a 6 or 12 yard open skip or a 16 yard enclosed, including 2 tonnes of bonded asbestos. Excess tonnage is £410.40 per tonne.

Worth knowing: asbestos cement is dense, and a skip hits its weight limit long before it looks full. Two tonnes is roughly 25 to 35 corrugated roof sheets.

Asbestos RoRo — commercial and large clearances

£2,649.60 inc VAT for a 20 or 40 yard open container or a 35 yard enclosed, including 3 tonnes.

For farm buildings, a full barn roof or a commercial strip-out around Ringwood and the western New Forest, a RoRo is almost always cheaper per tonne than repeat skips.

Work out the figure for your own load — enter your postcode and what you have, and it itemises transport, the consignment note and each item.

Can you take asbestos to a recycling centre near Ringwood?

Usually not, and it is worth checking before you load anything into a car.

Ringwood is in Hampshire, so the household waste recycling centres nearest to you operate under different rules from the Dorset sites a few miles down the road. Asbestos acceptance varies by authority and by site: some take small quantities by pre-booking only, many take none at all, and quantity caps are common where it is accepted.

There is a second problem people do not think about. Carrying asbestos in your own vehicle makes you responsible for it under duty-of-care rules, and a broken sheet in a car boot contaminates the car. If a bag splits you have a problem that costs far more than a collection would have.

Why a licensed collection is simpler

We are registered with the Environment Agency as an Upper Tier Waste Carrier (CBDU113405) and operate under Environmental Permit EPR/EB3308GT. Every Ringwood collection travels under a hazardous waste consignment note, you keep your copy, and we retain ours for three years.

If you need documentation for an insurer, a mortgage lender, building control or a principal contractor, say so when you book and we will make sure it is issued in the right name.

We are closer than you might think

Our Ferndown depot is on Ringwood Road at Longham, so BH24 is a short run rather than a special journey. That is the reason the Zone 5 rate applies here and not something dearer.

Asbestos disposal in Ringwood — frequently asked questions

Do you remove asbestos from my roof in Ringwood?

No. We collect and dispose of it once it is down and bagged. Bonded asbestos cement can often be taken down by a competent person following HSE guidance, which keeps the cost to disposal alone. Friable material such as insulating board needs a licensed removal contractor.

How much does asbestos disposal cost in Ringwood?

Van collection starts from £364 inc VAT plus the £50.40 consignment note, with a charge per item on top. An asbestos skip including 2 tonnes is £2,239.20 inc VAT, and a RoRo including 3 tonnes is £2,649.60. Use the calculator for your own load or ask for a fixed written quote.

Do I have to bag it myself?

Yes — bagging and wrapping is the customer’s responsibility on every service we run. Double-bag or wrap it, keep sheets whole where you can, and tell us what you have before you start so we can talk you through how it needs to be presented.

What happens if it is not wrapped properly?

Asbestos arriving broken, loose or unwrapped no longer qualifies for the carriage exemption, which means the load can be refused and returned at your cost. Five minutes on the phone beforehand avoids it.

Can asbestos go in a normal skip?

No. It is illegal and it contaminates the entire load. Asbestos needs a dedicated enclosed container from a licensed carrier, or a van collection for smaller amounts.

How quickly can you collect in BH24?

Ringwood is a short run from our Ferndown depot on Ringwood Road, so collections are straightforward to schedule. Ring before the afternoon and we will give you a firm date.

What paperwork do I get?

A hazardous waste consignment note completed on site, your copy left with you, and confirmation of the receiving facility and its permit number. We keep copies for three years and can resend them on request.

Do you cover the villages around Ringwood?

Yes — across BH24 and the surrounding western New Forest, including Poulner, Ashley Heath, St Ives, Burley, Bransgore and the Avon valley villages.
