If you’ve never hired a skip before, it can seem like a daunting task.
There are lots of different thoughts that might race through your mind – where can I get ahold of one? How can I arrange delivery and pickup? What happens to the waste once it goes into the skip?
It can be quite a complex process. But here at The Waste Group, we’ve made it our mission to make it as simple as possible to hire a skip. And in this post, we’ll be sharing all the “need-to-knows” of hiring a skip in Southampton.
WHY WOULD I NEED A SKIP?
A skip can be useful for all kinds of different jobs. If you’re a civil engineering firm starting construction on your latest project, you’ll need the right form of waste disposal to meet your needs. On the other hand, if you’re just a homeowner looking to move house, you might need a skip to do a clear-out of all your old stuff!
One of the main benefits of using a skip is that it can be a much more efficient way of disposing of waste. For de-cluttering at home, it can be a great convenience if you don’t like the thought of ferrying back and forth to the tip.
On development sites, however, it’s almost essential to the smooth flow of work. Of course, not every skip is suitable for every job, and there’s certainly no “one-size-fits-all” approach you can take. That’s why it’s important to consider what exactly you’ll need the skip for before you hire one.
Not everything can be put in a skip. To ensure that your waste is disposed of ethically and sustainably, it’s important to hire the right type of skip for the job.
The added benefit of using a trusted skip hire company can be the reduced impact on the environment. Unfortunately, much of the refuse at local tips, and indeed some skip companies, simply ends up in landfill. However, at The Waste Group, we aim to avoid disposing of waste in landfills wherever possible, and recycle what we can, when we can. This means that we’re not just disposing of your waste in an efficient manner, but we’re doing it with sustainability at the core.
In order for waste to be disposed of sustainably, it needs to be sorted correctly. And if you’ve never used a skip before, it can be a bit confusing as to what materials are allowed and which are not.
So – what exactly can go into a skip?
WHAT CAN GO INTO A SKIP?
Skips are typically separated into different categories based on what’s allowed to go in them. At The Waste Group, there are 3 types of waste to choose from:
- General Waste: Sometimes called mixed construction, this can include anything from bricks to furniture, and even UPVC windows.
- Plasterboard: Due to strict regulations on sustainable waste disposal, plasterboard must have its own skip and cannot go into a general waste skip. Please see our blog post here for why exactly plasterboard must have its own skip.
- Inert: Inert waste comprises stones, gravel, rubble, and soil.
As you can see, it’s important that the right kind of waste is disposed in the right kind of skip. This helps the waste to be disposed of safely and sustainably where possible. Please note as well that the above lists of allowable items are not exhaustive. For more detail on what can and can’t go into a skip, please refer to another blog post of ours here.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH MY WASTE?
As a waste company, we understand the worries people may have about where their waste will end up.
Many companies might opt solely for a landfill. But being located on the picturesque South coast of England is something we take a lot of pride in, and we aim to maintain it’s natural beauty. That’s we’ve taken extra measures to ensure we avoid landfills wherever possible, and instead can dispose of your waste in a sustainable way.
Once your skip is picked up at the end of the hire period, it’s then transported to a licensed waste transfer station by one of our vetted suppliers. Here, it is disposed of as sustainably as possible.
But what we’re most proud of is our commitment to re-usable energy. We aim to send whatever waste we can to “Waste from Energy” plants. At these plants, the refuse is put towards the creation of energy, to aid in powering the local area in Dorset.
Ethical and sustainable recycling of waste is something we put a big emphasis on. Rest assured, we aim to dispose of your waste in the most eco-friendly manner possible.
HOW DO I ORDER A SKIP?
At the Waste Group, we provide services across a range of areas including Southampton and Eastleigh. These are provided through our partner suppliers, who are strictly vetted to ensure they adhere to our quality standards.
We know that not every skip is suited to the job, and that’s the reason we offer skips of various sizes and functions based on your needs. From our Mini 4 Yard Skip, to our 40 Yard “RoRo” bins, we have you covered for any job.
And of course, if you have any questions about what skip would be best for the task at hand, our support team would be more than happy to help.
WHAT IF I DON’T NEED THE SKIP FOR THE WHOLE DAY?
Not every job requires you to hire a skip for a few days – sometimes you just need it for an hour to get rid of old clutter!
With our simple “Wait and Load” service, you can hire a skip for just 45 minutes. During this time, the driver will wait with you and your skip while you fill it up. After 45 minutes, your driver will transport your waste to our waste transfer station.
This is a popular option for those who want to get rid of old items quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
Of course, this is just one of many skip solutions we offer at The Waste Group; you can hire the skip for up to 2 weeks if needed! If you’re looking to hire a skip for longer than 2 weeks, then please contact our office and we can discuss this with you in further detail.
